Actually it doesn't matter what the spin is (1/2 ,1 ....). is zero if (in mean field theory) you assume | points in the z direction. What matters is how many Sz values are allowed.
Yes, on an exam, it is probably safe to assume spins point in z direction -- for any spin value.
