Particle Theory at Oxford
We are based in the Rudolf
Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics, which is part of the Department of Physics at Oxford University. Particle theory is
an exciting area of research that involves both using and extending
the most fundamental physical theories to understand the basic
structure of the universe. On this site, you will find information
about our members and their research activities, as well as details of
relevant local events, information about applying for graduate study,
and links to useful websites. In particular we have strong links with
our experimental colleagues in Particle
Physics as well as with the Mathematical
Physics Group in the Maths Institute.
If you are interested in joining us as a postdoctoral researcher,
please make an initial enquiry to the relevant staff member. We hold a
STFC Rolling Grant for postdoctoral support and welcome applications
for 2 year positions (usually considered in mid-December).
We are also happy to support suitable candidates for
STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowships,
Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships,
Royal Society University Research Fellowships,
Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships,
Newton International Fellowships ,
1851 Royal Commission Fellowships,
EU Marie Curie Fellowships,
... as well as
Junior Research Fellowships offered by Oxford Colleges and the
Glasstone Research Fellowships).
We have been involved with many EC-funded Marie Curie Research &
Training networks - the last one was the Initial Training Network:
Unification in the LHC era, PITN-GA-2009-237920 (Oct 2009-Sep 2013), PI: G.G.Ross
Job announcements
Research Studentship (ERC)*Deadline Passed*
Applications are invited from EU citizens for a DPhil (PhD)
Studentship starting 1 Oct 2014, supported by the ERC
Starting Grant "PDF4BSM: Parton Distributions in the Higgs Boson
Era". The successful applicant will work towards a DPhil degree under
the joint supervision of Dr Juan Rojo in Theoretical Physics
(juan.rojo@cern.ch) and Prof Amanda Cooper-Sarkar in Particle Physics (a.cooper-sarkar@physics.ox.ac.uk), to
whom specific enquiries may be directed. The 3.5 year
studentship covers University & College fees and an annual
tax-free living allowance of GBP 13,600.
To apply, follow the standard procedure in either Theoretical
Physics or Particle
Physics - please specify "ERC Rojo" in the field 'Title of research project', and "A Cooper-Sarkar/J Rojo" in the field 'Proposed supervisor'.
Candidates are asked to submit a CV/résumé, 3
academic references, and official transcripts detailing
university-level qualifications and marks to date.
Applications are invited for two postdoctoral positions to carry out research in
perturbative QCD and LHC phenomenology, funded by the ERC Starting
Grant “PDF4BSM” awarded to Dr Juan Rojo
(juan.rojo@cern.ch).
The posts are available initially for 2 years from 1 October 2014,
with the possibility of extension for a further year. For full details see
the further
particulars.
Applications must be submitted on-line by noon on 31
December 2014. Please upload a CV and list of publications, statement of research interests, and details of two
referees.
Applications are invited for a STFC-funded postdoctoral position
with responsibility for carrying out research in string theory, specifically in the areas of string model building and string phenomenology. Enquiries may be
directed to Professor Andre Lukas.
The post is fixed-term for 2 years from 1 October 2014. For full details see
the further
particulars.
Applications must be submitted on-line by noon on 18
December 2013. Please upload a CV and list of
publications, statement of research interests, and details of two
referees who should be asked to email letters of recommendation *by the
closing date* to tpr @ physics.ox.ac.uk.
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position funded by Dr
Joe Conlon’s ERC Starting Grant “Supersymmetry Breaking in String
Theory”, to carry out research in particular on the study of the phenomenological and cosmological implications of string models of supersymmetry breaking.
The post is fixed-term for 3 years from 1 October 2014. For full details see
the further
particulars.

Applications are invited for 3 postdoctoral positions to work with
Dr Andrei Starinets on “Gauge-String Duality and Non-Equilibrium
Physics”, a project funded by the ERC. The main focus of the research
is aspects of non-equilibrium holography and gauge-string duality, broadly defined, with applications to physics of heavy ion collisions and strongly interacting condensed matter systems.
The posts are fixed-term for 3 years from 1 October 2014. For full details see
