So long as the chemical potential is "well below" the bottom of the conduction band, any electrons excited into the band will be very close to the bottom of the band, so we don't actually have to worry about the shape of the band far away from the edge. We are extending the limits of the integral out to infinity just for convenience... the integrand is nonzeo only near the very bottom of the band anyway. [And similar with the top of the valence band].
