I'm not entirely clear on the question, but..
To clarify, in part a you calculated the energy E(n) of a system with only one direction of spin. In part b you divide up the total number of electrons into nup and ndown -- so two systems like those you studied in part a. You then have to add together the energies E(nup) + E(ndown) to get the total energy.
