iii) Diamond and Si and Ge are all in principle exactly the same. Remember that a semiconductor is just an insulator with a smaller band gap. So the difference there is quantitative not qualitative.
The point of the question is to conjecture -- between materials that are otherwise similar -- why might some have larger band gaps than others.
