i) 1 electron per primitive unit cell, so it is the situation as in Fig. 16.1
ii) 2 electrons per primitive unit cell, so we would expect a band insulator. Since it is a metal, there are probably 'overlaping' bands
iii) I don't get this one. 8 atoms per fcc means two atoms per primitive unit cell and each atom has 4 valence electrons. Thus, we have 8 (even) electrons per primitive unit cell and thus diamond must be also a band insulator. But what is with silicon and germanium?
