But thinking atomically, why would an atom moving in the x-y plane cause a wave to propagate in the z direction? Surely if the atom moves in the x-direction, it will push an atom in the positive x-direction and pull an atom behind in the positive x-direction, hence setting up a wave as they all move and restore.
