Known typos and errors in the Book, January 2013 Edition

  • Page 10, note 8 appears to be missing! It should say "We will study magnetism in part VI of this book"
  • Last (unnumbered) equation on page 32. First, the T downstairs is Tesla not temperature. Second, the kb should be upstairs not downstairs.
  • Page 33, Eq. 4.13. Since energy is dU = T dS + B dM, the energy that needs to be differentiated to make this equation correct is actually the "helmholtz" energy U - M B so that dH = T dS - M dB and M = -dH/dB. This error occurs again in chapter 19 at equations 19.8 and just before 19.14. Looking at 19.8, one realizes that this is actually sensible, because the free energy is calculated for fixed B not fixed M.
  • Page 52, section 6.2, starts out by saying that a covalent bond is when an electron is shared equally. A better definition would say "somewhat equally". As it gets more unequal you cross-over to ionic bond. But you would certainly call bonds covalent if it is vaguely equal sharing.
  • Page 105, Fig 11.6. It should say valence one per atom (valence two per unit cell). Not valence one per unit cell.
  • Page 120, Fig 12.15. The point in the center of the plan view should not be labeled with height a/2. Its height is 0 and a.
  • Page 143. The last sentence on this page is incorrect. Just cross it out.
  • Pages 198 and 204, there are several cases where the words "conduction band" and "valence band" are inadvertantly swapped!
  • Page 243, first equation of section 22.1. The second sum should be over i not j.
  • Known typos and errors in the homeworks

  • Question 4 of the revision problem set has a few factors of boltzmann's constant missing!
  • Note to tutors. Make sure you have the solutions for THIS year's homeworks. They are similar to last year but a few of the problems have changed and a few of the solutions have been improved. (Last year's solutions were mistakenly posted at the beginning of the term!)
  • Another note to tutors. There is a typo on page 47 of the notes. A factor of 2 is in the wrong place for the compressibility. (Should be obvious!). Also part f and g of this problem don't have solutions! This was an oversight on my part. Sorry about this! I hope the solutions are obvious!
