(2) No, you do not have to solve the Schroedinger equation in gory detail. You write a tight binding model with parameters E_{a}^atomic E_b^atomic, t_{aa}, t_{bb} and go from there. These parameters could be calculated from solving the schroedinger equation in gory detail, but you do not have to do this. All you need to do is solve a simplified tight binding version of the schroedinger equation.
