(1) Yes it is a typing error already on the "known errors" page here http://wwwthphys.physics.ox.ac.uk/people/SteveSimon/errors.html To save you one click it says " Exercise 11.4. It should say "if the atom is divalent" not "diatomic". Oops. " (2) No, you do not have to solve the Schroedinger equation in gory detail. You write a tight binding model with parameters E_{a}^atomic E_b^atomic, t_{aa}, t_{bb} and go from there. These parameters could be calculated from solving the schroedinger equation in gory detail, but you do not have to do this. All you need to do is solve a simplified tight binding version of the schroedinger equation. Does that help?
