Problem Set 2 Q2.8 e)
When both atoms have the same mass, the 1D diatomic chain is essentially a 1D monoatomic chain with lattice constant a/2, hence the BZ doubles in size. This I understand.
However, if you go through the math for the dispersion relation (plugging in m1=m2=m), I obtained 2 solutions for omega, one being cos and sine. Is there a reason for this?
