It seems a bit of a gross simplification to treat what is a highly complicated material suddenly as a quantum well. Does the crystal structure on a small scale not mess this up? I see that we can treat the band structure as forming a sort of effective potential in which the electrons live, but some textbooks mentioned that the lattice spacings on either side of the heterostructure must be similar. Why is this and what assumptions have we made?
