Hi,
When we use the wave ansatz in the spring model of solids, we use exp(iwt - ikna) which I suppose assumes that deltax_n << a. What are the consequences of making this assumption (what information do we lose?), if any, and what would happen physically if that assumption were not to hold? Would we then not have a solid because the amplitude of oscillation is too large and bonds break?
Thanks
