There are various externally funded fellowship schemes that exist to allow the development of research proposed by the applicant. We welcome and encourage researchers wishing to explore this type of opportunity, provided they contact an appropriate member of the sub-department (e.g., in his or her research area) or the Head of Sub-department well before the closing date. Examples of such schemes include:

• Royal Society University Research Fellowships (deadline usually October/November) and Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships (February)
• Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Research Fellowships (February)
• EPSRC and STFC Fellowships
• Marie Curie Fellowships

US nationals should note the Royal Society USA Research Fellowships which sponsor scientific collaboration between centres of excellence in the US and UK.
